New research shows welfare support has decreased by almost 50% since 2010

Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales has signed a joint letter to the Welsh Government raising concerns that thousands of people in need of urgent welfare assistance may be left with nowhere to turn, due to reductions in support.

The letter highlights new research from The Children’s Society and other partners on the Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF), which is the Welsh Government’s fund to support those hit by an urgent financial crisis or in need of assistance when moving into independent living in the community.

The research shows that the support provided through the DAF has decreased by almost 50% since 2010. The fund can make a huge difference when people find themselves hit by an unexpected emergency such as flooding, or can cover the cost of essential goods such as washing machines and refrigerators for a family in a vulnerable situation.

It also provides support to those moving into independent living including for anyone taking shelter in a refuge after fleeing domestic abuse or leaving foster care.

The Foundation, along with other organisations including Trussell Trust, Church in Wales and Action in Caerau, have joined The Children’s Society in calling for the Welsh Government to ensure the DAF has sufficient budget to be able to respond to the level of need.

The letter also calls for closer working with voluntary organisations, to ensure that people can access the support they need to address any underlying difficulties and prevent financial crises recurring.

Lloyds Bank Foundation are also funding work with the Children’s Society to better coordinate emergency welfare support at a local level.
